How to Do a Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

How to Do a Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

We have published hundreds of curly hair recipes on Naturally Curly, but to this day the most popular treatment of all time is: the mayonnaise hair treatment. This is probably because our grandmothers, our mothers, the magazine you browse at the grocery – everyone is telling you to use mayonnaise on your hair.

Does it really work?

Yes and no. We often see eggs and mayonnaise (because it contains eggs) incorrectly touted as a strengthening protein treatment that can combat breakage. However, in truth they do not work as a protein treatment because the protein in eggs is too large to fit into the cuticle. Proteins must be hydrolyzed in order to do the job. So if your goal is strengthening, try a protein rich product that has been formulated for that purpose instead.

If your goal is softer, shinier, smoother feeling hair, then mayonnaise may be a good match for you. Mayonnaise does contain some hair healthy ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar and soybean oil which contain fatty acids and vitamins that can boost shine and act to seal in moisture. To find out what’s in a store bought jar of mayonnaise and its benefits.

If you want to try a mayonnaise treatment for yourself, follow these steps.

How to do a mayonnaise hair treatment

Apply mayonnaise to freshly cleansed, damp hair the way you would a conditioner. Focus on the ends as they are the oldest part of your hair, and avoid your roots especially if you have fine or thin hair.

Put on a shower cap (a plastic bag works just as well) or a heated thermal cap. This step can increase the absorption rate of the mayonnaise into your hair.
Leave the treatment in your hair for 15-30 minutes.
Cleanse with a gentle shampoo to remove the mayonnaise from your hair. If you feel you still have some residue you can cleanse again.

You can buy store bought mayonnaise or you can make your own with eggs, olive oil, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil. Whichever mayonnaise you choose, always remember you can also add other natural ingredients such as olive oil, avocado, or honey to mix a custom cocktail for your hair needs. In fact, specifically adding almond oil and vinegar can help to get rid of lice.

If you’re looking for softer hair and extra shine, we recommend trying this treatment once a month.

Have you tried mayonnaise on your hair? How did it work for you?

4 Honey Treatments for Dry and Damaged Hai

4 Honey Treatments for Dry and Damaged Hair

Hair is pretty incredible. Although technically dead when it is outside of your scalp, it can still be “healthy” or damaged. Today we put so many products into our hair, apply high levels of heat to it, just to sculpt it a certain way, achieve a certain look, without second thought about what we’re actually doing. In my opinion, beautiful hair is healthy hair, and healthy hair is not the product of what you find on the shelves in stores, but rather in your own kitchen.

Why Honey (and the other stuff)?

If you have dry or damaged hair, honey can help. A natural humectant, honey attracts moisture. It’s also full of antioxidants and nutrients to feed hair follicles that house the live part of hair, encouraging hair growth. That being said, it also needs a medium to help spread it around, otherwise you can end up with just a sticky mess, so the recipes include other natural ingredients that help you restore dry hair to a health and luster, from the scalp up.

1. Just Honey

This recipe contains just honey and water, nothing extra added or needed!

You will need…

-1/4 cup of organic raw honey
-Fresh water

Directions

Mix ¼ cup of organic raw honey with just enough fresh water to thin it out to the point where you can spread it around your hair (add it tablespoon by tablespoon.) Obviously this depends on how much hair you have-you can up the amount of honey if you need to. When you’re ready, apply as you would shampoo to damp hair and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

2. Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is added here as it leaves hair with lovely shine and acts a natural conditioner.

You will need…

-1/4 cup of organic raw honey
-10 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Directions

Mix together honey and ACV. Apply as you would shampoo to damp hair, and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse out with warm water.

3. Honey and Olive Oil

Olive oil can create a big difference in moisture after just a few uses, and promotes a healthy scalp and hair roots. It also helps smooth and coat dry and damaged hair shafts.

You will need…

-1/2 cup of honey
-1/4 cup of olive oil

Directions

Mix together ½ cup of honey and ¼ cup of olive oil, warming the mixture slightly if you need to. Apply to hair as needed.

4. Honey and Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, like olive oil, helps moisturize hair and hair roots. It seems to add a little bit more shine (in my opinion) and is a little lighter as well. It’s packed full of nutrients that make it an automatic go to ingredient in hair treatments.

You will need….

-1/4 cup of honey
-3 tablespoons of warmed coconut oil

Directions

Combine coconut oil and honey and blend thoroughly. Work into damp hair as you would shampoo. Let sit for 10 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

Much of what you see in stores is just different ratios of basically the same stuff with different fragrances. With honey , you know what you’re getting every time, and personally, I love the results. I like to think of my hair as fairly healthy overall, but with the dry winter months coming up, a little extra moisture and conditioning is always wanted.

Tips

-Stick to raw organic honey. If you have to warm it a little bit that’s fine, but the ultra-pasteurized clear stuff you buy at the supermarket really doesn’t have many benefits.

-Try adding some honey to your regular shampoo or conditioner if you don’t feel like making up a separate treatment.

-Avoid harsh products and heat treatment (like straightening your hair every day.) Natural is beautiful!

-Be aware of the type of hair that you have. Applying olive oil and honey to limp, thin, hair that is prone to getting oily will probably just make it greasier and heavier.

-There’s no need to use these treatments every day. Once or twice a week should be sufficient.

-Be patient. Applying honey to damaged and dry hair is not going restore it to perfect condition right away.

Hair Care Tips

Hair Care Tips

In addition to the home remedies, there are certain other lifestyle changes you can make and tips you can follow to keep hair fall away.

1. Say No To Junk Food

It has been proven time and again that consumption of junk food can cause hair fall. Junk food contains excessive calories and no essential nutrients, which can eventually lead to hair loss.

You can instead switch to including more of green leafy vegetables, protein-rich foods, and fruits in your diet.

2. Be Gentle With Wet Hair

Wet hair is more prone to breakage, which is why you must be gentle while handling it. The best way to dry wet hair is to pat it with a dry towel, instead of rubbing it harshly.

3. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise enhances blood circulation and improves the flow of oxygen to your scalp, thereby controlling hair fall. Ideally exercise for about 30 minutes a day, five times a week.

4. Stay Hydrated

Drinking sufficient water is one more way of keeping hair fall at bay. Owing to our busy and sedentary lifestyles, we seldom remember the importance of keeping ourselves hydrated. Drink about 6 – 8 glasses of filtered water on a regular basis.

5. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Split ends can also cause hair fall. To avoid this, keep trimming your hair periodically.

6. Avoid Steamy Showers

Hot water dehydrates hair strands, making them brittle and vulnerable to breakage. Rinsing your hair with hot water also flushes out the essential oils of the scalp, which can lead to further shedding of hair.
You can instead go for a shower with lukewarm or normal water.

7. Stay Away From Hot Styling Tools

Exposing your hair to high temperatures can destroy the vital proteins and damage your hair’s protective cuticles. When the cuticles are damaged, the moisture balance of your hair gets disrupted, making it susceptible to breakage.

Ideally you can limit the usage of hot styling tools (including your blow-dryer) to no more than twice a week. Also, make it a point to apply a heat-protection spray to reduce friction and protect your hair.

8. Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Less (Or Too Much)

You can skip shampoo for a day, but make sure that doesn’t become a habit. Not washing your hair for days together can lead to the accumulation of dirt, oil, and product residue that can clog the pores in your scalp.
On the other hand, washing your hair too often (washing every day) might remove the essential oils your scalp needs. The best you can do is wash your hair every two days, more so if you are prone to excessive sweating and use many hair products. Use a sulfate-free shampoo (L’Oreal Paris EverStrong Thickening Shampoo) to prevent excessive dryness.

Hair fall might be a serious problem; but like most serious problems out there, it can be prevented and treated with simple home remedies. Follow what we have told, and you will never have to worry about hair loss again!

You can either follow the procedure in the night before going to bed or in the morning before taking bath. Do this every alternate day till you see the results.

Why This Works

Coconut oil contains antioxidants, which strengthen hair and give it a natural sheen. It also has antimicrobial properties that help fight scalp infections.

Caution

Note:

You can also use almond, olive, and amla oils in the place of coconut oil for similar results. Olive oil has been found to improve the elasticity of the hair, thereby preventing it from breakage. Almond and amla oils also help prevent hair loss and make it stronger.

♦Leave the mixture on your hair for about 5 minutes, and then wash it off with cool water.

When You Need To Do This

In the morning, after bath. Practice this remedy once or twice a week.

Why This Works

Lemons also contain alpha-hydroxy acids that exfoliate dead cells, eliminating dandruff in the process. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, an essential nutrient that helps maintain hair health.

Caution

Despite being safe, lemons contain acids. Hence, close your eyes as you pour the mixture over your head. Also remember not to use the lemon juice remedy too frequently or for a long duration – it can dry out your hair.

What vitamins are good for hair loss?

What vitamins are good for hair loss?

A good daily multivitamin containing zinc, vitamin B, folate, iron, and calcium is a reasonable choice, although there is no good evidence that vitamins have any meaningful benefit in alopecia. Newer studies suggest that vitamin D may be somewhat helpful and worth considering. Specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies like iron or vitamin B12 may be diagnosed by blood tests and treated.

Multiple vitamins, including biotin, have been promoted for hair growth, but solid scientific studies for many of these claims are lacking. While taking biotin and other supplements marketed for hair, skin, and nails probably won't worsen anything, it may also not necessarily help the situation. Therefore, advertised hair-regrowth supplements should be approached with mild caution.
